In the past, people will bring paper notebook and pen into classroom and office for jotting handwritten notes. This is the most transitional way to take notes.

Nowadays, there are a lot of light-weighted digital devices such as laptops, tablets and smartphones for people to carry to everywhere. Apart from the portability, these digital devices provide lots of different note-taking functions. Not only can people write or type the main points onto their devices, but also to record the long and fast speech immediately without missing any important points. Moreover, people could take photos to capture the written and displayed points on, says, whiteboard; and using a pen-alike scanner to scan and save the vital paragraphs when reading a book or notes.

Probably this change firstly helps to improve the effectiveness of note taking and secondly is more environmentally friendly since less paper are consumed.
